Let’s Do it! Nigeria unites with our state coordinators, volunteers, partners, and sponsors to organize a full-scale campaign project against illegal refuse dumping and implement efficient waste management that captures the 5Rs (Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). The aim is to ignite a joint effort from all the sectors of the society using technology through our mobile APP (Trash Out) for Mapping illegal waste dump sites.

World Clean Up Day takes place on the third Saturday of every September. On this day, volunteers and partners worldwide come together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.

The model of World Clean Up Day is bold – working to engage 5% of each country’s population to pick up mismanaged waste from nature on a single day. This is the tipping point that  starts a transformation  process in society and catalyses the collaboration between sectors to find new solutions in production and  waste management.

Next World Clean Up Day takes place on 17 September 2023

This is a project aimed at educating citizens of Nigeria both online and offline, our intention is to gamify these projects so as to justify statistics behind the global data research from our knowledge team while creating a positive change among smokers and latent smokers.

We will like to see numbers of location with highest number of cigarette butts compare to smoking health related issues in such location, we like to know the highest number of cigarette brand in various location and why, we like know locations that has highest illegal disposal of cigarette butts compare with settlement class etc.

Research has shown us that, there are 6 trillion cigarette butts produced each year, and 4.5 trillion of them end up in natural habitats and water bodies. Cigarette butts are made of plastic, contain around 150 different toxins, and are deadly for living beings. One cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1000 liters of water.

However, to commemorate the World Tobacco Day in year 2023 we will like to carry out this waste and brand audit regarding cigarette butts in an innovative manner that will change and re-orientate people’s behavior.

This is also a project aimed at educating citizens of Nigeria both online and offline through best practices, our intention is to expose participants to business opportunities in ensuring that plastics are totally removed from our society. We do not see these plastics as waste but as other form of raw materials that can be transform into viable products. How best can we reuse them such that it won’t end up in landfill, oceans, forests etc For instance production of inter locking bricks last longer in a water log environment likewise the use of glass bottles.

Research has shown us that every year approximately 12 million tons of plastic leak into oceans. (Breaking the Plastic Wave, 2020). By 2050, there is more plastic than fish in the ocean (United Nations). The plastic is already in our food chain. Plastic is so pervasive now, that particles can already be found in our salt, drinking water, even in beer. 90% of salt contains micro plastics (South Korea’s Incheon National University and Greenpeace East Asia).

Therefore, people eat plastic in an amount equal to a credit card per week. That’s approximately 21 grams a month, just over 250 grams a year (WWF, 2019).

Over half of the population on Earth uses the internet, but besides its positive effect on our modern societies, it also creates its own waste – according to research the CO2 emissions of the Internet and its supporting systems are higher than the World’s airline industry’s emissions.

In 2020, the ICT sector is estimated to have consumed on average 7% of the World’s energy production and emits each year 900 million tons of CO2. By 2025, it is estimated that data repositories will be using a fifth of all produced energy, as well as be some of the greatest polluters.

Our global website is usually updated with information and instructions on how to perform digital cleanup for both individuals as well as organizations. Everyone will be invited to register their cleanup results in our result counter starting from a particular date.

We also have materials for our state coordinators, volunteers and partners to help promote Digital Cleanup Day in 2023.
